The worst clashes between Palestinians and Shia Muslims in Beirut in six months left at least 17 people dead and 60 wounded, police and Palestinian sources said. The deaths came when Palestinian guerrillas and the Shia Muslim militia Amal exchanged mortar, rocket and machine-gun fire at the Borj el Brajne refugee camp. Seven children playing outdoors were killed and 12 people, mostly women shoppers caught in the open, were wounded when two shells landed inside the camp, the sources said. Police said 10 people were killed and 50 wounded when mortar shells hit crowded Shia residential areas around the camp.
