Brazil Poor Quit Slums for Leper Area

SAO PAULO, Brazil — Thousands of poor Brazilians are living in a leper colony near the Amazon town of Manaus because life is cheaper and better there than in the slums, a health official said Friday.
The official said that only about 2,300 of the 7,000 people in the city’s Colonia do Aleixo are lepers.
Some of the non-lepers are relatives of the sick, but most are there because life in the institution is cheaper, the official said.
