An anonymous donor has pledged $200,000 to the financially troubled San Diego Symphony, the orchestra announced Monday. Earnings from the donation were designated for use in the symphony endowment fund, specifically to be used for orchestra members’ salaries.
The unsolicited donation was made as an “expression of support” for the symphony management and its efforts to attain financial stability, according to a symphony press release.
After canceling its winter concert season last month because of deadlocked labor talks with musicians, the symphony was notified that all local, state and federal government funding, totaling more than $400,000, had been either canceled or suspended pending the outcome of the contract talks.
“It is gratifying to feel the support--both moral and financial,” symphony Executive Director Wesley O. Brustad said of the donation in a prepared statement.
