Steve Jones Wins Six-Round Event for PGA Qualifiers

LA QUINTA, Calif. — Steve Jones of Phoenix shot a final-round 75 Monday to finish with a 108-hole total of 17-under-par 415 to win the PGA qualifying tournament.
Jones, who posted rounds of 67-65-69-67-72-75, won by four shots over Australian Steve Elkington, who shot an even-par 72 Monday at the PGA West course to finish with a six-day total of 13-under par 419.
The victory was worth $15,000 to Jones. Elkington collected $9,000 for finishing second.
A total of 53 players earned their playing privileges on the 1987 PGA Tour by shooting scores of 2-over-par 434 or better over six rounds.
Among those earning their cards were Dave Eichelberger, Vance Heafer and Tim Norris.
