A group of 25 Northern California religious leaders urged both labor and management in the six-week-old Kaiser-Permanente strike to agree to binding arbitration to end the walkout. In a statement issued in San Francisco, the coalition expressed concern about the quality of health care being provided during the labor walkout, the physical welfare of striking workers during the holidays and criticized a proposed two-tier wage system as a violation of the principle of equal pay for equal work. The strike affects about 8,700 employees at 26 Kaiser hospitals and clinics throughout Northern California. A proposed contract was rejected by workers last week by strikers.
