Ueberroth May Amend the Rules to Let Garvey Be a Player-Owner

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — Baseball Commissioner Peter Ueberroth said Wednesday that it may be possible for Steve Garvey to buy the Padres and also to continue playing at the same time.
According to Major League Rule 20, no person is allowed to own a team and play at the same time. But Ueberroth said the rule can be amended if the commissioner says so. In other words, Garvey could be the Padre player-owner if Ueberroth agrees to let him.
“I’ve known Steve long before I took this job,” Ueberroth said Wednesday. “If something materializes and there’s a possible transaction, I’d sit down with him. Of course, I’d have to see who’s in his group.”
