Peruvian authorities covered up “gross human rights violations” in quelling prison uprisings last June, Amnesty International charged. The London-based human rights group said that at least 124 prisoners, many of them Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) guerrillas, were executed at Lurigancho prison when troops moved in. It also said that security forces tortured and killed inmates who had surrendered at El Fronton prison. “Although President Alan Garcia initially spoke out and helped, there has been a deliberate cover-up by both the civilian and military authorities,” the group’s report said. Peru’s human rights commission said the group’s charges were based on “superficial and false” information.
