STATISTICAL WATCH : Puathasnanon’s Peaks, Valley’s Form Average
- Share via
Sam Puathasnanon of Granada Hills maintained his 12-point scoring average in a strange way last week. He scored 20 points against San Fernando and then came back with four against Chatsworth.
Scoring: Rio Mesa freshman Eric Thomas scored 71 points in three games last week, including 31 against San Marcos. Thomas has made 57% (158 of 277) of his field goal attempts. His teammate Dave Tancreto, who averages less than 10 points per game, scored a season-high 28 points in a 72-68 victory over Hueneme. . . . Faith Baptist center Jason Henderson had 33 points, 23 rebounds, and 18 blocked shots in two games last week. . . . Harvard’s Steve Green (15.8), Mike Lowe, (15.4) and Andy Bell (11.2) are averaging in double figures. . . . Steve Ward, a 6-3 guard who holds the Calabasas school career scoring record by more than 800 points, passed the 1,800 mark Tuesday night with 29 points and has 1,812 points. Ward, a returning Times All-Valley player, is a four-year starter and is averaging more than 25 points per game.
Super symmetry: It’s easy to tell the haves from the have-nots among girls teams in the Golden League. Antelope Valley (7-1), Burroughs of Ridgecrest (7-1) and Palmdale (6-2) are the haves while Canyon (2-6), Saugus (1-7) and Quartz Hill (1-7) are going nowhere.
Girls basketball: Bell-Jeff forward Carlyn Couch, daughter of Coach James Couch, had consecutive 20-game performances against the two best teams in the San Fernando Valley League: Louisville and Alemany. . . . Christina Ornelaz leads La Reina in scoring (12.0) and rebounds (10.0). . . . Sylmar’s Keri Rincon scored a school-record 31 points against Verdugo Hills. Rincon scored 28 against Hollywood two days later. . . . Julia Johnson’s streak of scoring in double figures for Newbury Park in Marmonte League games ended at 10 when she scored nine against Camarillo last week. . . . Junior forwards Lina Mascarenas and Kris Pederson continue to lead Thousand Oaks. Against Royal last week, Mascarenas had 24 points and 10 assists.
