Approval Expected for Housing Project

HAWTHORNE — The City Council is expected to approve a four-story, 75-unit housing project for the elderly that exceeds building code height limits, after a public hearing last week in which elderly residents spoke in favor of the project.
The City Council delayed until Monday formal approval to allow TELACU, an East Los Angeles community development corporation, to build the project at 13000 Doty Ave. The city building code limits buildings on that street to 2 1/2 stories.
Ground breaking is set for September and the project is expected to be completed by the following summer. Rent will be set at 30% of household income, with the federal government subsidizing the balance of rents, City Manager Kenneth Jue said.
The city will provide TELACU with about $150,000 to pay for amenities such as a second elevator and additional landscaping.
