Geoff Brabham broke the qualifying record on the Miami street circuit, covering the 1.87-mile track at a speed of 96.832 m.p.h. in his Nissan GTP to win the pole for the Miami Grand Prix today.
Michael Andretti, driving a Buick, qualified second at 94.069 m.p.h., while Sarel van der Merwe of South Africa was third in a Chevrolet at 92.527 m.p.h.
Jim Adams of Los Angeles suffered a broken rib when his Porsche 962 hit the wall coming out of Turn 1. He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was kept overnight for observation.
