College Baseball : USD Wins First Game, but Pepperdine Takes Nightcap

Dave Rolls had three hits, including a two-run home run, as the University of San Diego beat visiting Pepperdine, 9-8, in the first game of a West Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader. Pepperdine came back to win the second game, 15-7, as Ruben Gonzales sparked a seven-run fourth inning with a grand slam off pitcher Rob Sparks.
In the opener, pitcher Pat Fitzsimmons (1-0) entered the game in the third with USD trailing, 5-2. A five-run fifth gave the Toreros the lead and Fitzsimmons the victory. Jim Doyle had five RBIs in the second game to help pitcher Steve Dell’Amico (2-0) get the victory for Pepperdine (2-1, 11-4-2). Sean Baron and Mark Trafton each had two hits and drove in two runs for USD (1-2, 10-4).
United States International University 12, Cal Poly Pomona 11--Bob Esquerra drove in the tying and winning runs with a double in the seventh to lead the Gulls (6-10) to the victory against the Broncos (7-8). Pomona took a 7-0 lead in the third, but USIU came back to score six unearned runs on six walks in the bottom of the inning. Dean Weese (2-2) was the winning pitcher, with Corey Way getting the save.
Southern California College 3-2, Point Loma Nazarene College 0-0--The Vanguards’ Jason Conelli struck out 13 in the second game to conclude a disastrous day for Point Loma’s offense. In the first game, SCC’s Mike Mansfield allowed Point Loma (4-7) one hit through the game’s seven innings.
