Delta Defeats Compton, 84-82, in JC Tournament

Monte Chadwick came off the bench and scored 23 points to lead San Joaquin Delta to an 84-82 victory over Compton Thursday in a quarterfinal game of the State Community College basketball tournament at Loyola Marymount.
Compton’s Gilbert Miller made a three-point basket with 30 seconds left to cut the lead to 84-82, and Compton (25-5) had a chance to tie the game but Lavert Simpson missed a layup with two seconds left.
Delta (29-2), the top-ranked team in the state, plays Ventura at 6 p.m. in seminfinal today.
In other quarterfinal games, Ventura beat Columbia, 102-92, as Maurice Pullman scored 24 points and Leland Wigginton 22 for the Pirates; Saddleback edged Skyline, 64-62, and Rancho Santiago defeated Merced, 66-60.
