The American defector pictured in photographs released by the Soviet news agency Tass is indeed a U.S. Army private who went AWOL from his unit in West Germany, the Army said. Lt. Col. David Burpee, an Army spokesman at the Pentagon, said service officials in West Germany had identified the man pictured in the Tass photo as Wade Evan Roberts and the woman with him as his German girlfriend, Petra Neumann. Roberts listed his home of record as San Bernardino, Calif. Tass released photos of the two in Moscow’s Red Square on Wednesday.
