Buffalo Roams by Homes, Is Farmed Out

POTOMAC, Md. — A stray buffalo, wearing an ear tag that said contact the U.S. Department of Agriculture if found, was captured Sunday by local police and animal experts, authorities said.
The animal was sighted in an area of a housing development that borders a quarry, said Ann Evans, a spokeswoman for the Montgomery County police.
Members of the county’s Animal Control Unit and county police were called to the site, but the unit did not have the appropriate drugs to tranquilize the buffalo, Evans said.
Police summoned William Bondurant, an expert in tranquilizing animals, and Harold Holbrook, a veterinarian. The two succeeded in sedating the buffalo, which was later taken to a farm in Poolesville, Md.
Police are trying to determine where the buffalo came from.
