County and Sheriff’s Department officials broke ground Friday for an expansion of the the County Jail in Vista, which sheriff’s deputies say will nearly double the jail’s rated capacity from 246 to 542.
The project includes about 109,000 square feet of new construction, renovation of 25,000 square feet of existing space and 67,000 square feet of roofing.
On Friday, the County Jail in Vista housed about 533 misdemeanor and felony suspects, including 13 women, according to Sheriff’s Capt. Jim Marmack.
County and jail officials said completion of the entire project will take about two years.
The Vista jail will continue to book suspected misdemeanants and felons during the two years of construction.
After the new jail is completed in about a year, the Sheriff’s Department will transfer prisoners to the other jails, including the County Jail downtown, while renovation of the interior of the old facility is completed.
