‘Overriding Democracy’

It seems to us that the Iran-contra conspirators plotting to bypass Congress and defy the legislation forbidding aid to the contras, have brought our nation to the very brink of a coup and most of us would not even have been aware of it.
It indeed would seem that the combined forces of retired military men of high rank, mercenaries, CIA, and National Security Council personnel, foreign and domestic arms merchants, Swiss bank accounts, corporations headed by others of questionable background, corporations set up as dummy fronts for covert activity, all of these, could very easily have become a viable force to overthrow our constitutional democracy.
