FOURTH OF JULY : Few Teams Willing to Play Over Holiday
- Share via
John Pierce has a problem as organizer of the L.A. City Department of Recreation and Parks annual Fourth of July softball tournament.
Nobody wants to play.
A few teams were willing to compete this weekend, but not enough for Pierce, the Recreation and Parks senior sports supervisor for the Valley, to schedule a tournament for the holiday weekend.
“This year, we put out all of our fliers, but because of the three-day holiday more and more people were going out of town or playing in tournaments outside of Southern California,” Pierce said.
Pierce needed a minimum of 24 teams, but has had up to 60 compete in past Fourth of July tournaments. Proceeds from the annual tournament were to go to promote Valley-based youth sports.
While no special events are planned this weekend, all City recreation and parks facilities will be open.
Fireworks shows will be staged at both Pierce College and Cal State Northridge on Saturday.
