Pet Owners Urged to Take Precautions in Using Fireworks
- Share via
As preparations are made for Fourth of July celebrations, the Southern California Veterinary Medical Assn. has asked pet owners to take special precautions.
Association officials said that noise created by exploding fireworks can be not only frightening but dangerous to pets.
Sudden, sharp or prolonged noise from fireworks can cause extensive damage to the extremely sensitive ears of most domestic animals, the association said. Even normally calm animals can become highly agitated or confused by the noise and flashing lights of fireworks and try to flee.
Veterinarians also urged people to remember that carelessly discarded sparklers or other home fireworks can burn or otherwise harm pets, particularly if an animal tries to chew or swallow them.
Officials recommended that pets be kept indoors during Fourth of July celebrations at or near the home. And for especially nervous pets, they advised owners to get in touch with their veterinarian, who may be able to prescribe a medication to help calm the animal.
