A mild earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale hit the desert north of Palm Springs and was described as an aftershock of a powerful temblor a year ago, officials at the Caltech Seismology Lab in Pasadena said. The gentle shaker was centered about 12 miles northwest of Palm Springs.
