International Paper earnings were up 18%in its second quarter, despite a higher tax rate this year, start-up costs associated with new equipment and some production shortfalls due to labor disputes the company is experiencing at four mills. The Purchase, N.Y., company credited positive market conditions for most of its major products and the strong worldwide demand for pulp and container board for its performance.
