All but nine of the 174 Asian migrants who were smuggled into Canada have been ordered released from detention at a military base in Halifax, Nova Scotia. All will be released after Canadian sponsors come forward to post bonds. A lawyer for the Asians, who are believed to be Indian Sikhs, said there have been many offers from people in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver to post bonds. The 173 men and one woman landed in a tiny Nova Scotia fishing village on July 12. A small freighter that brought the group was later stopped by the Canadian coast guard and the crew arrested.
