To Live Forever

Regarding “Forever Young,” by Mark Christensen ( June 21), I wish to make a comment or two. Several years ago, I read that we were on the verge of conquering all viral diseases, and we were further assured that anything in the way of new strains of disease could be cured with our medical arsenal. Not only are we losing the war against cancer, despite intense efforts over the past 35 years in diagnosis and treatment, but we have the other old, unconquered plagues--arthritis, Alzheimer’s, muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis--still with us. And then we have that nightmare alien visitor--AIDS. Let’s conquer some diseases before we live forever, because it won’t be worth living forever if those diseases still strike us down. Allen W.
