BEIJING — A Beijing court sentenced two men to death for the June murder of an American tourist, the first reported killing of a U.S. citizen in China since the 1949 Communist takeover, the New China News Agency said today.
The agency said Cui Yuzhong, 23, a pipe fitter, and Dai Wen Xin, 27, a bricklayer, were convicted of murdering Ewald Cheer, 61, a teacher of Chinese from San Angelo, Tex., in the compartment of a Beijing-to-Canton train on June 20. The two men also were convicted of robbing Cheer, a U.S. citizen of Chinese descent, of travelers checks worth $180 and $6.20 in Chinese currency.
