The orchestra, whose 50th birthday is ostensibly being celebrated here, unsuccessfully competes with the garrulous conductor for the film director’s attention. But there are two engrossing segments: a harrowing clip of an in-concert demonstration against a Wagner performance by Mehta and the orchestra, and the aged Artur Rubinstein’s lovably stumbling bit of wish fulfillment as he conducts the IPO in some Brahms.
