Laguna Beach High School scored all its points late in the first half Friday night and held on to defeat Costa Mesa, 10-7, in the Pacific Coast League opener for both teams in front of 700 at Davidson Field in Newport Beach.
Cornerback Mike Davis got the Artists (5-1, 1-0) started with an interception with 2:35 left, and quarterback Danny Lane drove Laguna Beach 67 yards on 8 plays. Lane threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to flanker Broc Stephens.
Two plays after the kickoff, linebacker Jason Crabbe recovered a Mustang fumble, and then kicked a 51-yard field goal with three seconds left in the half.
But Lyman Olney, Laguna Beach coach, was more impressed with his defense.
“The offense got some big plays, but it was our defense that won it with intensity,” he said.
Lane, the county’s second-ranked passer, completed 14 of 17 passes for 140 yards. Stephens had seven receptions for 79 yards.
Costa Mesa (1-5, 0-1) was led by Terry Bryant, who gained 120 yards in 26 carries.
