Philadelphia Orchestra members voted 75 to 29 Monday to approve a three-year contract with management, averting a strike that would have silenced the orchestra for the first time in more than 20 years. But the 106 members of the orchestra also unanimously approved a vote of no confidence, challenging the “ability, integrity and intent of the Philadelphia Orchestra management to represent the orchestra as the world cultural asset it is,” said Emilio Gravagno, chairman of the orchestra members’ committee. Judith Kurnick, director of public relations for the orchestra, said only that management “is pleased there will not be a work stoppage.” Orchestra members will get a 5% pay increase in each year of the contract. The weekly base pay will rise from $950 to $1,000 the first year.
