LONDON — Prince Philip gave Queen Elizabeth II flowers for their 40th wedding anniversary today and celebrated quietly with her at a secluded country home, Luton Hoo, in Bedfordshire, where they have spent many past anniversaries.
The British news media today nostalgically recalled the couple’s Nov. 20, 1947, wedding, a display of royal pageantry that lifted Britain out of its postwar gloom of rationed food, fuel, clothing and furniture.
