Gorbachev and the Summit
Smiling Gorbachev almost made it out of town without slipping in his own glasnost . What he did to 15 American students who came to him to seek the truth should never be forgotten, never ever, especially by those in education (Part I, Dec. 11).
Baby, did he give them a lesson in old-fashioned communism. They even got some candy and hugs during the “rare personal meeting.” But he also took a pratfall by not allowing them to ask a few “questions they had meticulously prepared regarding arms control, human rights and glasnost or openness.”
Actually, he did American parents, students and teachers a big favor by showing us how the Soviet system doesn’t give a damn about students and their questions.
