The widow of Mao Tse-tung has been released from prison and is living outside Beijing, a Hong Kong magazine reported. According to the Dec. 31 edition of the Far Eastern Economic Review, Jiang Qing, 73, is living in a villa in the suburbs of Beijing but is in poor health. Five years after his death, Mao’s widow and three other members of the so-called Gang of Four were convicted of trying to usurp power during the 1966-76 Cultural Revolution. The magazine reported that the other three--Zhang Chunqiao, the former vice premier; Wang Hongwen, former Communist Party vice chairman, and propagandist Yao Wenyuan--may also be released from prison soon.
