Oscar Omissions

I was quite astonished to find that Bette Davis’ name was omitted from Jack Mathews’ list of potential Oscar nominees in the Best Actress category for 1987 (“Thinking, Talking, Breathing Oscar,” Dec. 27).
Does he honestly believe that Cher, Christine Lahti, Holly Hunter, Sally Kirkland or Faye Dunaway give better performances in their films than Davis delivers in “The Whales of August”?
