Defending Southern Section 2-A champion Woodbridge High of Irvine is the next obstacle for the La Canada boys basketball team.
La Canada advanced to Friday’s quarterfinal game with a 60-57 decision over Artesia on Tuesday. Center Chad Givens had 22 points for the Spartans, who are 25-2 and only two victories away from equaling a school-record for wins.
Glendale High wasn’t as fortunate. The Dynamiters (21-5) ran out of time Tuesday against Santa Ana, losing 54-53.
Justin Lord and Jeff Sofro combined 40 points for Glendale. Lord, who had 21, pulled the Dynamiters within two, 52-50, with a three-point basket with 14 seconds left in the game.
Leo Leon made both ends of a one-and-one free-throw situation for Santa Ana with eight seconds remaining to put the game out of reach.
A three-point shot by Sofro as time ran out got Glendale within a point.
Santa Ana won it with balance. Four Saints players scored in double figures. Center Bobby Joyce had 11 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots.
