Lakers Play Red-Hot Mavericks Today

DALLAS — The Lakers couldn’t have picked a worse time for their first visit here this season. Not only are they without Michael Cooper, who was left home with a sprained left ankle, but they are facing the hottest team in the National Basketball Assn.
The Mavericks will bring an 11-game winning streak, a franchise record, into this afternoon’s game at Reunion Arena, which will be televised nationally. Mark Aguirre is doing his usual damage--he’s averaging better than 26 points a game--but the revelation has been forward-center Roy Tarpley, who is among the league leaders in rebounds--with an average of more than 11 a game--coming off the bench.
The Lakers beat Dallas in both meetings this season in Los Angeles: They held on for a 119-116 victory on Nov. 20, then rallied for a 103-89 win on Jan. 6. Byron Scott is averaging 26.5 points a game against Dallas, while Aguirre is averaging 32 points against the Lakers.
This is the first of a four-game-in-five-nights trip for the Lakers, who are unbeaten in three games on CBS this season and 5-0 in afternoon games.
