SAN DIEGO — - Actor David Ogden Stiers, Old Globe Theatre veteran, will undertake a new role center stage at Symphony Hall next month. The San Diego Symphony has announced that Stiers, known for his portrayal of the effete Bostonian Major Winchester from television’s former “MASH” series, will conduct the symphony on April 9 in the orchestra’s annual pension fund benefit concert.
The good news from the symphony box office is that last weekend’s Superpops concerts with Cab Calloway brought audiences of 1,834 on Friday and 2,135 on Saturday, solid houses for the 2,200-seat Symphony Hall. It was a healthy improvement over last December’s Superpops, when fewer than 4,500 people attended all five Mitch Miller concerts.
