Texaco Inc. said it filed an appeal of a multibillion-dollar damage judgment in the U.S. Supreme Court but stressed that the move was only a formality in the event its settlement with Pennzoil Co. fell through. Texaco agreed in December to pay Pennzoil $3 billion in return for Pennzoil dropping the $10.3-billion judgment. The settlement was the keystone of a bankruptcy reorganization plan that was approved by a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge in White Plains, N.Y., last week.
