Lupe Aquino scored three knockdowns over Milton McCrory and earned a 10-round majority decision in a junior middleweight bout Sunday at Atlantic City, N.J.
Aquino, the former World Boxing Council 154-pound champion, decked McCrory with left hooks in the second and fifth rounds. He was credited with a third knockdown via the standing eight count when he had McCrory trapped helplessly against the ropes in the eighth.
The knockdowns proved to be crucial as McCrory lost despite holding a 5-4-1 edge in rounds on two scorecards. New Jersey scores fights on the point system.
Aquino, 24, of Santa Paula, Calif., is 32-4-1 with 22 knockouts. He is ranked by all three of boxing’s sanctioning bodies and hopes to soon fight for a world title.
McCrory, 26, of Detroit, is 33-3-1 with 24 knockouts. The former WBC 147-pound champion indicated he would retire.
