Will attend an earthquake preparedness demonstration in Carson today.

Floor Action:
Forestry: Passed and sent to the Senate on a 61-11 vote a bill (AB 2720) by Assemblyman Byron Sher (D-Palo Alto) to appropriate $7.2 million to plant tree seedlings on 20,000 acres of non-industrial lands denuded by 1987 forest fires.
Committee Action:
Pesticides: The Assembly Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials Committee approved a bill (AB 4097) by Assemblyman Lloyd Connelly (D-Sacramento) to establish a state program to test and monitor the level of cancer-causing pesticides in canned and packaged foods. An 8-5 vote sent the bill to the Agriculture Committee.
Driver’s Licenses: The Assembly Public Safety Committee rejected a bill (SB 1657) by Sen. Art Torres (D-Los Angeles) to suspend for one year the driver’s license of anyone under the age of 21 convicted of an alcohol or drug-related offense. A 3-2 vote was cast on the bill, but four yes votes were required for approval.
Child Care: The Assembly Revenue and Taxation Committee approved a bill (SB 722) by Sen. Gary Hart (D-Santa Barbara) to authorize tax credits for employers who help finance child care programs for their employees. A 13-0 vote sent the bill to the Ways and Means Committee. The governor has vetoed similar legislation in the past.
Senate
Committee Action:
Credit Cards: The Senate Judiciary Committee approved a bill (SB 1948) by Senate President Pro Tem David A. Roberti (D-Los Angeles) to require credit card forms to be carbonless or not contain a separate piece of paper or carbon that readily identifies the cardholder by name or number. A 7-0 vote sent the bill to the Senate floor.
