Local News in Brief : Woman Dies in Fire at Panorama City Home

A woman was killed and a man critically injured during a Panorama City house fire apparently caused by careless smoking, fire officials said.
The Los Angeles County coroner’s office identified the woman as Mary Basevi, 63. David Basevi, 64, was listed in critical condition at Panorama Community Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Three fire companies extinguished the blaze late Friday in the 14800 block of Strathern Street in less than 10 minutes, Los Angeles city Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells said.
Firefighters found the body of Mary Basevi in the bedroom of the two-story house, and her husband was found in the living room, Wells said.
Damage to the house was estimated at $30,000, Wells said.
