Mormon Council President Dies

SALT LAKE CITY — Marion G. Romney, president of the Mormon Church’s Council of the Twelve Apostles and one of the faith’s general authorities for 47 years, died at his home today of natural causes. He was 90.
As the most senior member of the Twelve, Romney was next in line to become president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. However, because of his advanced age and failing health, Romney had not been active in church leadership for several years.
A native of Colonia Juarez, Mexico, Romney was one of the guiding forces behind the church’s self-help welfare system, created in 1936.
