San Francisco spent nearly $500,000 for rooms for the homeless in 32 low-cost hotels that apparently weren’t used, according to a city audit that covered a two-year period. The audit was the third investigation in three years that concluded that the Department of Social Services mismanaged the homeless shelter program. It also said the department spent millions of dollars without fully accounting for the money.
