Los Angeles police say they have no suspects in the death of a 15-year-old girl, who was shot and killed Wednesday near her Harbor Gateway home as she talked to a group of friends.
Brenda Lopez was standing on the sidewalk in the 800 block of West 165th Place, just east of Gardena, at 9:55 p.m. when a car with its headlights off drove by, and one of two occupants opened fire on the teen-agers.
Lopez, a ninth-grader at Peary Junior High School, died a short time later at Gardena Memorial Hospital. None of her friends were injured.
Police Detective Patrick Marshall said the assailants were gang members, although Lopez and her friends had no gang affiliation.
The teen-agers had been planning a celebration for Lopez’ 16th birthday, which would have been next Saturday.
