PITTSBURGH — A woman who lived with her family in a pickup truck camper for five days while awaiting a liver transplant was in critical condition Friday after the 12-hour operation. Pollie Smolenski, 26, of Hallie, Ky., received the transplant Thursday, three days after authorities moved her into a donated apartment.
Smolenski and her parents, Raymond and Ersley Eldrigge, lived in the camper atop their pickup, parked in a lot on the University of Pittsburgh campus. Her three children remained at home with their father, who had to quit his job in a coal mine to care for them.
