ZAMBOANGA, Philippines — A motorized canoe filled with parents and children on a shopping trip capsized, drowning eight of the children, the military said Sunday.
The boat, carrying about 20 passengers, overturned Saturday after it was buffeted by heavy waves brought about by monsoon rains, said Lt. Col. Porcawa Dia, the Philippine constabulary commander on Basilan island. The accident happened between the nearby islands of Bubuan and Saluping in the Sulu archipelago, nearly 600 miles miles south of Manila.
