Local News in Brief : Principal to Leave PV High

Bernard Samuels, principal of Palos Verdes High School in Palos Verdes Estates, announced this week that he is leaving to become principal at Santa Monica High School.
A West Los Angeles resident, Samuels accepted the offer from Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District because the job would provide a new challenge and he would live closer to work, said Nancy Mahr, spokeswoman for the Palos Verdes Unified School District. Santa Monica High has about 3,000 students, twice as many as Palos Verdes High.
It could not be determined how much Samuels will earn in his new job. His current salary is $48,000.
Replacing Samuels will be Kelly Johnson, principal of the Rancho Del Mar continuation high school, Mahr said. Johnson’s replacement has not yet been determined.
Samuels, who has been principal for three years, is the second high-ranking administrator to leave the district in the last two weeks.
A week ago, Lawrence W. Burnight, assistant superintendent and former principal of Miraleste High School, announced that he was taking a position with the Long Beach Unified School District.
Mahr said that Burnight’s duties will be shared by other administrators and that his position will not be filled at Miraleste, which the district has been trying to close.
