Joy Ride Ends as Police Ticket Girl, 13

A 13-year-old North Hollywood girl who decided to take the family car out for a spin to Los Angeles found herself Saturday with an adult penalty--a ticket for driving without a license, authorities said.

The girl, whom police declined to identify because of her age, was spotted and stopped by California Highway Patrol officers near 43rd Street and Compton Boulevard around 6:30 p.m. Friday, CHP Officer Charlotte Foley said. The car was undamaged, and police impounded it, she said.

The teen-ager had apparently been driving for about 1 1/2 hours when she was stopped, Los Angeles police said.

The girl’s older teen-age brother had spotted her around 5:30 p.m. as he was driving in downtown Los Angeles, Sgt. Fred Haptonstal said. He was not able to follow her and informed his mother when he got home that his sister was driving around the city, he said.

Haptonstal said the mother notified police of her daughter’s joy ride.

After she was stopped, the girl was taken to her grandparents’ house on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and released, officials said.
