Vons Cos.’ second-quarter net income more than doubled to $5 million, compared to a year ago. The El Monte-based supermarket chain attributed its significant earnings improvement to sales and merchandising programs implemented in the first quarter, including price cuts, a return to an unlimited double coupon policy and the conversion of most of its stores to 24-hour operations.
