Mattel Inc.’s second-quarter net income soared 88% from last year to $3.2 million. Sales fell 19% to $207.1 million. The Hawthorne toy maker attributed the results in part to cost controls and the decision to extend the estimated useful lives of tools, dies and molds to three years from two years.
