Local News in Brief : Ballot Measure Rejected

The Redondo Beach City Council rejected a last-minute call by Councilman Ronald Cawdrey for a November ballot measure that would remove the City Charter’s 2-term limit for the mayor and council members.

The City Council, however, indicated that it may put such a measure on the March ballot.

The city clerk, city treasurer and city attorney, who are also elected to 4-year terms, can serve an unlimited number of times.

Cawdrey was appointed to the District 5 seat in 1982 to fill the unexpired term of Gene King. The councilman, who was elected to 4-year terms in 1983 and 1987, said in an interview that the 2-term limit puts some city staff members in a position to have more influence on city policy than elected officials.
