The state has returned $3,492 to President Reagan and $9,095 to Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III, among others, from unclaimed bank accounts, state Controller Gray Davis said Tuesday in Los Angeles.
Reagan and Meese were among more than 6,000 Californians to get money under the controller’s efforts to identify and locate people whose accounts have gone unclaimed for more than seven years.
So far, more than $3 million has been returned. Accounts that have been inactive for seven years or more are turned over for safekeeping to the controller’s office, which has amassed a trust of more than $375 million in 1.1 million individual accounts.
Davis said he found $94.96 that appears to belong to Gov. George Deukmejian.
“We received a call from the controller’s office yesterday,” acknowledged Kevin Brett, the governor’s press spokesman. “We are presently identifying the circumstances of the sum in question.”
Reagan recently received $3,492 from a dormant campaign fund account. Meese received $9,095 from a personal account left by his late father, Edwin Meese Jr.
