Gymnast Kristie Phillips, the second alternate on the U.S. Olympic team, was notified that she will not be allowed to travel to Seoul as an official team member, her mother said.
Olympic rules allow for a six-member team and one alternate to travel to the Games. Phillips, who has trained with Bela Karolyi, finished eighth.
After the Olympic trials last month at Salt Lake City, the U.S. Gymnastics Federation and the U.S. Olympic Committee agreed to allow Phillips to train as a member of the team for the last month. They petitioned the Seoul Olympic Organizing Committee to allow Phillips to travel as an additional alternate.
The SLOOC denied the request two weeks ago, but the USGF continued to appeal until gymnastics officials in Indianapolis were told that the decision was firm.
Phillips was once considered one of America’s rising stars in the sport.
