McDonnell Douglas Corp. said it won two major orders worth a total of $1.2 billion. The St. Louis-based aerospace company said the Italian national airline Alitalia had placed orders for 27 additional twin-jet MD-80 aircraft, worth $830 million. The aircraft will be delivered between 1989 and 1992. The MD-80, the company’s most popular passenger aircraft, can carry as many as 155 passengers and flies up to 2,500 miles at a stretch. McDonnell Douglas also said the Civil Aviation Administration of China has placed an order for four MD-11 jets, worth about $400 million, with delivery planned from 1992 to June, 1994. The MD-11 is the company’s new long-range wide-body aircraft.

McDonnell Douglas sold four of its MD-11 jetliners Tuesday to the China Civil Aeronautics Administration, a government agency of Taiwan. The Times incorrectly reported Wednesday that the sale went to the Civil Aviation Administration of China, an agency of the People’s Republic of China.
